From the rural countryside of Central PA, Miya Matsui was born in September of 1994. She grew up surrounded by a family of artists and lush, green nature.

Always reminded by her parents that what she did must be an open expression of her intentions and purpose, Miya pursued classical ballet until she was 18 years old.

Through this, she experienced a raw, vulnerable first interaction with art.

Fortunate enough to take her studies to New York City and Moscow at the Bolshoi Ballet Academy, Miya found deep inspiration in the connection of people drawn from art, and a true way to heal through this. She began painting in the summer of 2014, after leaving ballet and sustaining a prolonged injury.

Since then, Miya has developed a devout love and respect for painting, and for finding the breath of the colors and depth of the world around us. Working largely with oils, Miya desires to create pieces that speak to viewers, pieces that may show them a fragment of their own inner light and beauty reflected back at them.

Miya explores the strength of the human spirit in her artwork, in all forms: in the power of embracing our true, naked inner beings, and in sadness, and the vulnerability to connect in that; in reaching into and expanding out our love and spirit.

She focuses on the contrast to balance this strength: the flow of the empowering dark and the gentle light, together... And the colors that lie within that. What comes from this exploration is Miya’s true voice.
